Chapter Eleven

So that’s chapel for this Wednesday night.” Pastor Jason, the leader for the evening, announced from the stage at the front of the auditorium. The band stood behind him, waiting to play. Mike stood behind Jason, his hands folded over the top of his electric guitar, his long hair hanging over his eyes. He shook it back, looked out over the audience, and caught Emily’s eye.

Emily felt a peculiar jolt and then quickly looked away. This is weird, she thought. Then she pushed the feelings aside. She missed Troy—that was all. And there was no way to get in touch with him because no one had a cell phone and the line at the only phone the campers could use was always too long. Besides, the phone was only available from noon to five o’clock.

“Our worship band will play one last song, and then it’s campfire time.”

Emily glanced around the auditorium. The benches were placed in a semicircle facing the stage. The floor was cement and always dusty. No one was dressed up. Everyone wore hoodies or T-shirts and jeans. Most everyone seemed to be having a good time. The energy in the gathering gave her a shiver.

“I don’t feel like going to campfire,” Ashley whispered to Emily just as Jason stepped aside for the band. “I didn’t get enough sleep last night.”

“I told you to stop talking,” Emily said with a laugh.

“I know. It didn’t help that Nicole wouldn’t stop either.”

“I know what you mean.” Having Nicole in their cabin was a definite downer. She and Ashley had to be careful what they talked about, which wasn’t as much fun.

“We’ll have to find someplace we can talk away from her,” Ashley said. “She’s starting to get to me.” Ashley yawned again as the drummer started a quick beat. The guitars joined in, and soon the campers were on their feet, the scrape of the wooden benches on the floor barely heard above the noise of the band. “You coming back to the cabin with me?” Ashley asked, raising her voice to be heard.

Emily shot a quick glance at the front of the auditorium. Mike stood on the stage, singing, his head bent over his guitar as if lost in the music.

Ever since she had seen him on the dock the first day she was here, Emily had been looking out for him. It was as if he had disappeared. Then, the second night in the auditorium, a tall figure sauntered up to the stage. Her heart did a funny little flip when she saw Mike pick up a guitar and sling it over his shoulder.

She had a boyfriend, she kept reminding herself. A guy she really liked. Yet something about Mike caught her attention.

Emily shook her head. “I’m not tired,” she yelled back, dragging her attention back to Ashley.

Ashley was grinning at her. “Or you want to see if Mike is coming to campfire?” she said in Emily’s ear.

A flush warmed her cheeks. “I like campfire,” she said, thankful this was the truth.
