Izzie had primped and preened in record time, putting on a clingy knitted dress sheâd stumbled across in the window of a boutique on the main street. After slipping on her ankle boots with a studded butterfly pattern across the front, she ran her fingers through her hair in front of the mirror, tussling her locks into an effortless âjust rolled out of bedâ look. Sheâd forgone make-up other than a quick swipe of lip gloss. Her skin was glowing with excitement. In fact, since being here, sheâd felt lighter and healthier than she had in ages.
Not once had she drunk too much or hidden her pain behind an extra shot of vodka.
It had been a welcome reprieve.
The reflection that met her gaze had her standing taller. Nerves fluttered in her belly. Should she come clean? Would Ethan look at her differently?
Sheâd had a few slips of the tongue already, but not once had he said anything. He kept his thoughts so carefully guarded. A momentâs hesitation was now turning into a second guessing game.
Stop! Ethan was a good guy. Somehow sheâd known that the moment sheâd met him, and his actions had only proved her hunch to be true.
He cared. He was a wonderful human. She could only hope heâd understand why she wasnât honest from the get-go. He was a bodyguard by profession, for crying out loudâif anyone understood the need for privacy and protection, well, it was him.
The only question was, did she tell him before they took things to another level? Or after?
Unable to make that decision, she turned on her heel, grabbed her bag and keys, and walked out, closing the door with a solid click behind her.
What if she told him and he rejected her? What if he walked away? Izzie was no fool. Sheâd had serious crushes on guys in the past, but not one of them had been privy to the real Isabella, with no smokescreen and no crown. Sheâd shown Ethan who she was. Sheâd invited him into her thoughts, her fears, and heâd returned the favour. Could she trust heâd understand that she was still the same person when he found out the truth?
The air was collecting a hint of cool. The day had started off shining and bright, but clouds had rolled in, obliterating the sunshine. It felt later than it was. Her stomach rumbled, issuing a mixed warning statement of hunger and anticipation.
She skipped up the front-deck steps, her boot heels clip-clopping against the wood. The view from the expansive deck was amazing, and she hoped to coerce Ethan out here later tonight when it would show nothing but a sea of lights sparkling before them.
After placing a gentle knock against the door frame, she slid the glass across, expecting to find Ethan waiting inside. Instead she was met by a fast-talking and frustrated voice coming from the bedroom. His ski bag was packed and sat in the middle of the living room. Her mind skittered at that sight, her heart leaping into her throat as she picked out words from his conversation.
