A short while later, after tucking the kids in bed and enjoying a half hour of peace in the large master tub, I head downstairs. Still aware of the eerie feeling in the house, I make my way across the living room and down the hall. The only things I have eyes for right now is a hot cup of tea, my blanket, and a long night of no sleep. Even though this is the first time in days that I have felt somewhat relaxed, I still don’t hold high hopes of accomplishing more than twenty minutes of nap time.

The stove clock flashes eight thirty. The boys should have surely landed by now. Realizing I haven't heard or seen my phone since I arrived, I wonder if they have called, but really not wanting to check, I pacify myself with the logic that if they needed something, they would have called the house line. Sharon knows I am here as does Bob, and well, they are the most likely people to want to get a hold of me. Checking the door again, taking a quick glance out of the peep hole, I head into the kitchen. The kettle sits bubbling on a low heat, and my cup sits waiting for me. I smile, knowing that Tanner left it there for me. He knows me so well.

Open at the last page I read, I grab my book and my tea and push open the door of the living room open with one foot.

All thoughts of the strange messages seem to disappear, but just as I nestle into my blanket, I jump as a cold rush hits me. Looking around for an open window, I see nothing. I look to the candle, but the flame seems to stand still. The hairs on the back of my neck stand on end as I search the room, not making any sudden movements. The sound of the wind whistles just outside the window. I don’t relax completely, but I do calm enough to read.

Three pages in, I can feel my head drooping. Feeling tired, I close my eyes for only a second. A flash of light snaps me from my slumber. I couldn’t have been asleep for more than five minutes. Reluctantly opening my eyes wide, the room is dark other than the small, flickering light of the candle. I don’t remember turning off the lamp. Sitting up, running my hands through my hair, and feeling very out of it, I stand up, gingerly making my way across the room, trying not to walk into anything in the dim light. It’s like a mine field in here on a good day, especially if the boys have been playing in here with their cars. Clicking the light on and off, nothing happens.

“Damn it,” I growl.

Tip-toeing through the mine field, flicking the switches on and off as I go by, the result are the same—nothing. I head back towards the kitchen in search of a flashlight or something.
