SHOOTING SNEEZES

You’ve probably had lots of colds or maybe even the flu. Colds and the flu are caused by viruses. There are lots of different cold viruses, which is why you can catch a cold more than once.

When a person with a cold sneezes, the particular cold virus they have flies out of their mouth and nose if they don’t trap it (see Trap the Sneeze), landing on surfaces and people in the same area and possibly infecting them too.

Imagine a room full of people in which one or two have a cold. That’s a whole lot of flying viruses going around.

In this activity, you’ll make a sneeze shooter using a balloon and water to demonstrate how cold viruses spread.
