I stepped out the front door the next day and felt my magic go from a slight hum to an alarming buzz. With more energy, my magic was easily accessible.

Vicky stopped and eyed me from the driveway. “Brielle, remember what I taught you. At this rate, you’ll burnout by lunchtime.”

I remembered Vicky’s advice from last night. If I wasn’t using the magic, I needed to keep it suppressed. Otherwise, it would build up. Then I’d be back in bed . . . or worse. I closed my eyes and pictured my magic as a pulsing ball radiating from the center of my body. Then I made the ball shrink, pulled it in and felt the buzz die a little more with each tug. By the time I finished, it was a low vibration tickling my insides. Like that wouldn’t be a distraction. Hopefully I’d get used to it.

And my headache too. It felt like I carried a constant weight on my head. The pressure was uncomfortable but the pain wasn’t too bad.

I tried not to grumble as I sank into Vicky’s passenger seat. For the first time, I seriously considered skipping school. Addie had made her wish and probably wouldn’t make any more. My time would be better spent getting Addie’s parents back or finding who was behind the genie murders. Not to mention my need to get behind the wheel of my very own Lamborghini, maybe one with a 6.5 liter and 700 horsepower.

“How’s your head?” Vicky asked.

Not realizing I was rubbing it so hard, I smoothed my hair into place. “It’s been better.”

“At least you’re not lying on the floor.”

I turned toward her. “Can it be that bad?”

Vicky shrugged. “Happened to me if I waited more than a day to fulfill a wish.”

At least she didn’t have to worry about having a burnout by using too much magic. What would it feel like, though, to know your magic was so weak? Too weak or too strong. Either way, we were both limited.

Vicky pulled up in front of the school toward the end of lunch period. It took that long for me to get my energy back.

“You don’t need to pick me up,” I said. “I’ve got work to do.” Code for creating a better car and using it to find Addie’s parents.

“For school?”

I smirked. Yeah right. “No, for my genie assignment.”

“Good. Be sure to keep your cell phone on you.”

I went to Art and Choir, unaware of the students around me. The teachers might’ve called on me, but my mind was busy, focused on my magic. It hummed and I wanted to pull. Wanted to find Addie’s parents. Addie and I didn’t even talk much.

In P.E., Addie snapped her fingers in front of my face three different times to get me back into the activity. The class was split in two, each half on different sides of the gym. They were trying to hit each other with balls. It was like they thought Travis hitting me with the softball was awesome so they turned it into a game.
