When we return to the Solaris village, Muto and Gorn are beset by panicked queries. Everyone wants to know the outcome of the meeting. This is understandable. However, with everyone surging up around us like the surf at high tide and talking at the same time, it’s down right frightening.

I can’t even begin to fathom how Gorn and Muto deal with all the stress involved with being responsible for so many lives. I had enough anxiety worrying about my meager crops, and those were hardly sentient sapient beings.

“Calm down, please.” Muto holds his hands spread out wide to the multitude. “I can’t hear you if you all talk at once, please.”

“This is about to turn nasty.” I look up at Gorn. “You’re going to have to intervene. Muto is a great peace time leader, but at times like this…”

Gorn’s jaw works silently as he regards me with his golden eyes. Then his nostrils flare as he sucks in a great breath of air.

“Quiet.”

The Solaris fall silent as the power of Gorn’s voice reverberates through the village. My ears are ringing, and I wonder if Istvan heard that shout all the way in his camp. Gorn turns his gaze on everyone in turn, making sure he has their full attention.”

“We do have important things to impart, and we will do so now that it is quiet enough to do so. Frankly, our meeting with Istvan did not go well.”

Murmurs rise up from the Solaris like shimmering heat from a sun drenched paved road. Gorn raises his arms in the air, and everyone falls silent again. Creid steps forward and clears his throat, holding his wide brimmed sun hat in his hands.

“Ah, why did it not go well? We and the others were talking, and it’s been decided that if the AMD wants this village so badly, they can have it. We can always relocate elsewhere.”

A Grolgath man joins the debate, his eyes glazed with near panic.

“We’re not going to spill blood for some huts and farm land.”

A general chorus of assent goes about the village, and I bite my lower lip with worry, looking with empathy at poor Gorn. He’s not going to have an easy time imparting the reason why they can’t flee.

“I’m sorry, but that’s not an option.” Gorn licks his lips, and then sighs. “Unfortunately, your village is built upon ruins that Istvan and his Ataxian Priestess ally Vurla believe were created by the Precursors.”

“The Precursors are a myth,” shouts the frightened Grolgath.

Once again, many in the village agree with him. Gorn waits for the tumult to die down, and then speaks again

“Maybe they are, and maybe they are not. That’s not our problem. The problem is, our aggressors believe the ruins hold many secrets, Precursor or no. In order to keep those secrets silenced forever, they intend to make sure none of you make it out of here alive.”

The Solaris fall into shocked silence, and Gorn quickly moves on before they have a chance to panic.

“But our enemies are not gods, like the Precursors may have been.
