“Spring BREAAAAKKK!”

Carson bangs open Nick and Nate’s door, bellowing like a deranged gorilla. Of course those two idiots are still asleep even though it’s nearly noon.

I showed up over an hour ago at Cricket’s room like she asked, and helped her pack up for our camping trip. She very kindly lends me a sleeping bag and a bunch of other things because all I have is a backpack with some clothes and a toothbrush. Then we go looking for the guys but only Carson is ready to go.

“Get up, assholes!” Carson shouts. “We’re leaving in ten!”

“I’ll be ready in five,” Nate says from the top bunk and rolls over.

“It’s break. I should be able to sleep in if I want to,” Nick complains. He sits up, looking groggy, with his hair going every which way.

Cricket and I hover behind Carson, blocking the hallway with all our stuff. It hardly matters since the dorm is mostly empty already. Other, cooler people are flying to Florida for spring break, but we’re only going as far as the nearest state park.

I try not to notice that Nick’s only wearing a t-shirt and boxers. How does he look so adorable first thing in the morning? With a groan, he staggers out of bed and over to the closet with his arms outstretched.

Needless to say, we don’t leave in five or ten or anything like it. Carson decides he wants to eat lunch in the dining hall, while Nate takes a leisurely shower. Nick turns on every light in his room including a flashlight, searching for things then throwing them into a duffel bag. I offer to help but he says he can do it, so I sit on the bed next to Cricket.

Watching him groping around in the closet, occasionally putting a shirt or something right up to his face, is seriously triggering my devotee feelings. I love seeing how he does ordinary things, how he moves through the world differently, how he manages so well even though he can’t see. My whole body is tingling, right down to the soles of my feet. It’s literally killing me. I try to keep an expression of bored indifference on my face, like Cricket. If Nick knew I was feeling this way, he would never speak to me again. Stop it, I tell myself. Just stop it. At least he put on some damn pants.

I finally ran into Catherine the other day as I was at the theater department main office, booking space for my next installation. We passed in the hall and I could tell she was trying to pretend she hadn’t seen me.

“Hey, what’s up,” I said, daring her to ignore me. “How ya doin’?”

“Fine.” She glanced at me for a second then slid her eyes away and hurried down the hall.

I wish she had come out and said she’s dumping me because she thinks I’m a sick pervert. Nothing she says could be more cruel than the script I make up in my head, what I imagine she’s thinking about me.
