Chapter Fourteen
The next morning, pretty much the whole of the top two year levels were the worse for wear. Those few who hadnât come to Apolloâs party werenât the type to drink even if they had come.
Apollo, Valen, and I had got a Callahan car back to school that morning, arriving just in time for morning mass. Apollo didnât take his sunglasses off until we were sitting down in our pew, and Valen didnât even bother. Sister Agnes almost told him off, but seemed to think better of it on second thought.
As I sat down next to Florence, I could feel her buzzing with questions. She knew Iâd snuck off with Valen, of course she did, but weâd yet to have time to really talk about it.
The rest of the party had passed in a blur. All I could remember was lots of laughing, always smiling, Apolloâs hand on me constantly, his lips at my ear, and the ache in my feet suggested there had been a lot of dancing involved. I couldnât remember Florence getting on the bus to head back to school. I was fairly certain Iâd tried to convince her to stay with me, but sheâd never like the Callahan Estate. She said it was full of ghosts, whatever that meant.
Choir practice was the first time weâd really been together without either Apollo or one of his Angels being within ear shot. It was like Marco knew we had something to talk about and was trying to stall us as long as possible.
âSo?â Florence whispered while we were supposed to be singing the aria.
âSo, what?â I whispered back.
âWhat happened?â
âWhat do you think happened?â
âYou fucked him?â
Exie turned around with a raised eyebrow and Florence flashed her a quick grin. As much as I liked Exie, she was just another Saint to Florence, and I didnât blame her. Exie hadnât bothered to get to know Florence either.
âWell?â Florence pressed.
Just as I opened my mouth, Sister Felicia tapped her baton on the music stand in front of her and the music came to a stop.
âIf weâre interrupting you, Miss Walton, Miss Vanguard?â she said.
âNo, Sister,â Florence said. âSorry, Sister.â
âGood, becauseââ
At that moment, Brightonâs hand flew to his mouth and he ran from the room. It had been happening on and off all day. One kid had even thrown up all over the floor of the dining hall. The teachers and nuns had been doing their best to ignore it. As Sister Felicia did now. Almost.
âThere are worse interruptions,â she said coldly. âWould it prove less distracting if you were to come to the front, Miss Vanguard?â
I ducked my head. âYes, Sister,â I answered as I squeezed my way to the front, changing places with Exie.
So, it wasnât until after Florence had finished in the Art Studio that we had a chance to talk. I knew how much she was looking forward to it, so I made sure to leave Apollo in time to be walking through the front doors to the girls dorm at the same time as her.
