So FOMO. Sound familiar? Wikipedia describes this common feeling as âa pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absentâ.
OK, wait. Letâs look at that again. Basically, itâs having thoughts that others are having a better time than you. That you might miss out on something great by not being somewhere. âSomewhereâ being online social or offline in person. It comes down to experiences. You value creating and sharing memories just as much as having products and possessions. Hence this feeling of missing out on an experience is heightened.
This social angst is characterised by âa desire to stay continually connected with what others are doingâ. Donât panic. You are not alone. Itâs experienced by over 70% of millennials, the generation of people now aged 18 to 34 years.2
It can extend well beyond your disappointment at missing that party on Friday night or the latest update on your Facebook feed. This anxiety that others are having a great time without you can affect how you feel and the decisions you make.
Tell-tale signs you have FOMO
⥠A will-not-go-away urge to stay continuously connected to your friends online. (No, you wonât die if you disconnect, trust me).
⥠Fear of being at home, left out, when everyone else is doing something. (Home alone is awesome. You get to have the remotes all to yourself!)
⥠Saying, âYes, Iâll be there!â even when you donât really want to go, just in case you might miss something fun. (Who said that? It just came out of my mouth, without me even thinking about it!)
⥠Constantly checking your phone because you never want to miss anything. (Thatâs the 22nd time and itâs just been a minute.)
⥠Always watching TV and movies, then talking about the latest one to come out. (Did you hear the latest about the latest? What latest?!!)
⥠Constantly wondering what others are up to and feeling it might be better than what youâre doing. (I just know she is spilling all the latest right now!)
