Chapter 13

A groan left my lips as I rolled over in the bed. Morning hunger was gnawing at my insides, reminding me I had eaten nothing last night.

When I couldn’t stand it any longer, I got up and went to the bathroom, quickly brushing my teeth. I washed my face and pulled my hair into a ponytail before I went downstairs. I was still in last night’s clothes. My attire was presentable, and I didn’t bother to change. The Cortezes had known me since I was a child, and this wasn’t new.

“Good morning,” I called to no one in particular and grabbed a piece of bacon from Mike’s plate before taking a seat beside Orlando. Mike filled my plate while I grabbed another bite from his.

“What a tramp!”

My sleepy eyes snapped to the woman I hadn’t seen before. Did she just call me a tramp? My eyes narrowed to slits as I swallowed the bacon.

“You call this thing your girlfriend? What a shame to the Cortez family,” she continued as if I wasn’t present.

“And who might you be?” I asked, oblivious to the tension in the room.

“You dare to question me, slut? What did you do to my son?”

Her son? However, before she could speak the next word, a voice boomed beside me.

“Enough!” Orlando’s fist landed on the table. I jumped slightly and turned to see Orlando glaring at the woman. The glass of juice he held in his tight grip cracked at the impact, leaking its contents. “You’ll not disrespect our guest. And you are not welcome here.” All the remnants of sleep had left me now as my heart raced.

“Did you forget who I am?” the woman hissed, not fazed by his anger.

“Of course not.” Orlando clenched his jaw. “I don’t forget the ones who betrayed me, especially you.”

“You—”

“Enough, Isabel!” Uncle Rick commanded. “Leave before we forcefully remove you from the property.”

Oh, this must be the runaway mother Mike told us about.

“You can’t do that, husband,” the woman, Isabel, stressed in a sickly sweet voice. Uncle Rick’s face changed when she waved an envelope. “I have a court order.”

“Not for long,” Orlando snarled. His chest heaved as he stormed out of the room as the woman smirked. I’d never seen him this furious. I noticed his untouched plate and glared at the woman, who was now taking a seat beside Chiara. Uncle Rick was the next to storm out.

After contemplating for a second, I grabbed Orlando’s plate along with mine and left the dining room, not wanting to see how things would go. I had to find Orlando.

“Where did he go?” I asked one of the staff, who pointed me toward the rooftop. “Thanks. Can you bring some milk and juice?”

“Sure, Miss.”

When I reached the rooftop, Orlando was staring into the distance. The blue t-shirt he wore this morning stretched, emphasizing the muscles underneath as his hands tightened around the steel railing. I placed the plates on the table before going to him.

“Hey,” I called softly, and when he didn’t turn, I went to stand beside him, gazing at the sea.
