2.Urine, milk, or a yeast-containing sugar solution were added to several glass flasks, the opening of which was transformed into a swan-neck duct having a small opening to air. In one series of experiments the content was stored at room temperature without any modification, whereas in a parallel series the content was boiled for a while. In the first series, fermentation was detectable within a few days, whereas the liquids of the second series remained sterile. When the swan-neck ducts were removed, so that the sterile flasks had a wide opening, fermentation started within a short time.
