Because the media play a major role in how the public perceives a social issue, it is significant that so little attention is given to the gender category. Members of the public receive much of their information on social issues from the media, so if gender-bias cases are not reported, the public generally does not know that these types of crimes exist. This is troubling, particular because victims of gender-bias crimes may not be aware of the assistance available to them within the criminal justice system.
Perhaps even more disconcerting is the influence the media has on whether cases are thoroughly examined as possible bias crimes. By bringing attention to a possible bias incident, the media can not only inform the public, but can also bring the case to the attention of key people in the criminal justice system. This is important because some cases may not be investigated as bias crimes unless the media identify them as such or pay particular attention to them. Therefore, by failing to cover gender-bias crimes, especially in comparison to the coverage of other enumerated categories, the media perpetuate the idea that the gender category is not a viable part of the stateâs hate crime law. In sum, this lack of coverage affects how the public and law enforcement officials perceive the gender category and its fit in the hate crime framework.
