Rik felt the tingle of magic echoing through his bones. He was familiar only with dragon magic, and this was something else altogether. Something even more ancient than his winged companion. If the legends were to be believed, this magic dated back to the time of the great wizards. One of them had, in fact, created dragonkind. And gryphons. And even the dreaded skiths.
The beings who had put this magic in place had access to power far greater than almost anything available in the world today. That was, in part, due to the war that had finally ended their epoch. When the great wizards had disagreed about the path forward in the role of the different races in all the lands, the conflict had used so much magic on both sides, it had drained the great wells of power. Nobody alive today knew if magic of that magnitude would ever return to the lands.
Certainly, there were remnants of the wizardsâ presence. The creatures they had created, the mighty works they had performed, the spells they had woven intended to last the tests of time. This gate was one such edifice. The instant Rik touched the rippling surface, all these thoughts passed through his mind in a flash. Just as he felt something inside the magic testing his mettle, observing his reactions, and examining his heart.
It all happened in the shadow of an instant, and then, he knew. He had passed the test. To him the opaque and dazzling blue of the gate clarified. He could see within, and the vision took his breath away.
Knowing he had been granted a glimpse of what they were trying to protect, Rik stepped back from the gate. He shook his head, which was so full of information and feelings at that moment. He had just experienced a life-altering moment, when his duty became blindingly clear, and any possible last lingering questions he might have had about his role as a knight were answered. His whole existence had just been validated by the very highest authority.
For within the Citadelâs design, Rik had perceived the presence of divinity. It was clear to him now, after seeing what he had been shown, that the Mother of All had taken an active role in designing the prison that had protected the world from evil for so very long.
âWhat happened?â Scott asked Rik as he was still recovering from the experience.
He just shook his head. He had to clear his throat a few times before he was able to speak. âJust do it, Scott. You wonât regret it. I canât describeâ¦â Rikâs words failed him.
Scott patted Rickâs shoulder in a comforting way. âAre you sure youâre all right?â
âFine,â Rik assured his fighting partner. âDo it. Youâll see.â
He stood back with Claire, watching as Scott approached the gently rippling surface of the gate. Scott reached out his hand and touched the surface. In the blink of an eye, he stepped back, shaking his head as Rik had done. Rik had no doubt that his friend had experienced something very similar to what he had just seen.
