Chapter 9: Conspiracy Uncovered

Darcy left his wife asleep in their bed when his valet knocked on the door to deliver the message that Charles Bingley was waiting to speak to him in his study. He covered Lizzy with blankets and watched her sleep for a moment. Before opening the curtains and leaving his bed, William kissed her cheek tenderly. He hated that they were not allowed the morning to be together as newlyweds should. William dressed quietly, trying not to disturb his bride.

“Darcy, I did not realize that the evening would affect you so much. Even after long nights at balls, you usually are up early.” Bingley arrived before breakfast. He wanted to know about Jane. “When I left for Scarborough, you were interested in Miss Elizabeth. I know that you were getting Edward to host a dinner so you could acquire an introduction to her. Now that you have spent time with the family, please tell me about the angel in your box last evening. Jane is the most beautiful woman that I have ever seen.”

“These gentlewomen have left their estate due to an unwanted marriage proposal from the heir of their father’s estate. Jane could return as her mother would never allow her to marry the heir, but Elizabeth has been targeted as the sacrificial lamb to save her family. She must remain in London for her protection.” Darcy then proceeded to answer Bingley’s questions. “If you are truly interested in getting to know Miss Bennet, you could directly ask Edward for an invitation. You are an investor in Gardiner Industries. You could arrive at the business, then escort Edward home for lunch. At that time, you could ask Miss Bennet if you could come by and sit with her the next day.” Bingley was not a very confident man, so Darcy attempted to bolster his esteem. “You will have to determine if you want to spend time with the lady. It will be up to you whether you pursue her.”

“I will head to Gardiner’s business later this morning. Thank you, Darcy. I look forward to seeing my angel again.” With a plan in place, Bingley was ready to leave for his appointments.

Richard then arrived and announced “How are the newlyweds?” before entering the room and realizing that William was not alone. Bingley turned around with a question on his face.

“Richard, you cannot keep a secret. How does the military win any battles if you know their plans?” Darcy fumed at his closest relative. “Charles, we are not announcing my wedding until certain conspiracies come to light. We know that my Aunt Catherine has been trying to manipulate my life, now she has enlisted her rector who happens to be the Bennet heir. He is the man from which Lizzy received an unwanted proposal. Additionally, my sister and yours have been trying to get me to marry Caroline for years. I am no longer available, but we need to know how far Georgiana is willing to plot against me.
