He was gone when I woke up. But, he left a note. It was the first time he’d ever bothered with such a thing, but it didn’t make up for the fact that he was gone. He had a team meeting he couldn’t miss; I understood that on a rational level. But on another, more basic level I was hurt and furious. I couldn’t very well expect the man to disregard his responsibilities in order to deal with me and my ridiculous abandonment issues.

Hell on Earth began shortly after I arrived at work. Tara was at her desk, still doing her damnedest—and failing—to get a meeting with Jean Turst, the reporter who had outed her relationship with Joshua Keller. I’d known Tara since junior high school, so I knew how well she took failure, which was to say not at all. In high school she would have been voted “the person most likely to be absolutely perfect or die trying” if such a category had existed.

Kristen Travis, our third partner in business and sometimes dubious operations that might have been considered crimes by less enlightened people, was at her desk—moody and well into her fifth day of a “big fat pity party.” “She’d been that way ever since she’d come across the reporter and had accidently given a statement that had all but told the world that Tara was, in fact, fucking a client. Tara had taken the situation in good grace but Kristen had climbed up on the cross.

The hellish portion of my day had arrived about halfway through my first venti café latte, which was sacrilegious. CeCe Richards strolled into our offices like she’d been there a hundred times when in fact she’d never even set foot in the building. The look she sent me made me want to check and make sure my skin wasn’t falling off.

“CeCe.” I raised an eyebrow and glanced at the rolled-up newspaper she had in hand. “Caleb didn’t mention you might stop by.”

“He doesn’t know.” She tossed the paper onto the desk in front of me, sprawled messily across my keyboard. “I look like a fool.”

I sighed and organized the paper so I could see what she was talking about. The headline in the “social section” was enough to make my mouth drop open. I cleared my throat. “‘Caleb Howard makes first-time public appearance with longtime lover, Sonya Carson.’” The byline was familiar. “Jean Turst strikes again.”

“Goddamn it!” Tara sat back in her chair dejected. “What the hell did we do to this woman, seriously! Did one of us steal her boyfriend or maybe her favorite jeans or something in college? I just don’t fucking get it.”

I scanned the article and felt my cheeks flush with heat. “So I’m a whore.”

CeCe sighed. “I told Caleb it was a mistake for me to go to all those parties and things with him.”

I sighed. “Jeez, you know he’s going to flip his lid.” I motioned her to sit. “So why did you?”

“Because he got tired of all those fresh young things that may or may not be legal trying to crawl into his lap.
