Chapter 9

“Sup, boo? I ain’t heard from you in a minute. What’s been goin’ on?” Kaya asked after Stoney answered her call.

“Not much, girl.” Her eyes were on Asad as he slept. He ended up giving up that room at the W. He’d already met her mom, and they’d hit it off. Now he didn’t care who he met. Stoney didn’t know if she was ready for Kaya to meet him yet. “What you been up to?”

“Working and trying to act like a girlfriend. Rocky wants to be together for real, for real, but I don’t know if I’m ready.”

“What’s holding you back? Is it something he did or the niggas from your past?”

“To be honest, it’s probably the niggas from my past because he’s actually not a bad dude. I mean, he ain’t perfect, but he’s good to me. He respects me, and he’s always full of compliments. I never have to pay for shit. I want to be wit’ him, but I don’t want to get hurt again.”

Able to relate, Stoney shook her head. “I feel you, but it might just be worth taking that chance.” She touched Asad’s face and kissed his lips softly.

He stirred in his sleep but didn’t fully wake up.

“You might be right.” Yawning, she said, “I was just checkin’ up on you, boo. I’m ‘bout to lay it down. I gotta work in the morning. Call me tomorrow.”

“A’ight, night, boo.”

Cuddling closer to Asad, she buried her face in his neck and drifted off to sleep.

“So, my daughter was in LA with you the entire time?”

“Yes,” Asad told Tasha as they sat down and had lunch together at a wing spot not far from her apartment complex. He didn’t give her too many details about their arrangement. He simply told her that they had met on a dating site, and then he flew her out to the West Coast.

“Oh wow, she’s so secretive.”

“So am I. We both agreed to not say anything until we were official.”

“I guess you’re official now.” The thought made Tasha smile.

Looking at Asad, she could tell that he had a lot of money. The way he spoke and carried himself as well as the car he was driving told it all.

“Yes, we are. I’m going to marry her. That’s why I have to get G out of the way.” He couldn’t have a repeat of what happened to Iris. His heart couldn’t bear such a loss again, so he would do whatever he had to do to keep his woman safe. It didn’t matter what it was.

“Really? You two are so young.”

“Not too young to know what we want. It’s no rush, but I am definitely staking my claim.”

“You seem to be a very mature, successful young man. Stoney has always been an old soul.” Tasha laughed. “Way beyond her years. Me and her father always said she’s been here before.”

“Where’s her father?” Asad asked curiously as he picked up a fry and popped it in his mouth.

“He passed away some years ago.
