Chapter Eleven

THE POETS' CLUB

But those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus,

Never cared to report, nor to return:

They longed to stay forever, browsing on

That native bloom, forgetful of their homeland.

–The Odyssey, translated by R. Fitzgerald

We had this "Poets' Club" in the early '80s that was remarkable for showing me a different side of my colleagues. No poetry was read. It was a "Happy Hour" association that met at the Little Tree Inn. Its sole purpose was not to discuss literature but to enrich our after-work lives, especially for those who were single. The half-price drinks and free hors d'oeuvres made the atmosphere congenial.
