5. Project: Use the ideas at home to express liking or loving a member of the family
The project between Sessions 2 and 3 is for your child to actually express affection for the nominated family member, using the ideas discussed in Session 2, and to discuss at the next session what he or she did or said, what was the reaction of the family member and how that family member felt. Extend this, if appropriate, to include expressions of affection for significant adults or friends and classmates.
Session 3: Giving and receiving compliments
Start the third session with a reminder of what happened in the previous session. Discuss key points and words of wisdom.
1. Review the project from Session 2
First, discuss the project. Explore with your child situations within the family (or friendship) where there is an expectation of affection. Ask your child to provide feedback on who was the recipient, the type of affection, the response of the other person, and how he or she felt when expressing affection. Emphasize the positive consequences for both the person receiving and the person giving affection.
The main theme for Session 3 is giving and receiving compliments.
2. Why do we give compliments?
This activity explores the thoughts and feelings that your child is expressing when he or she gives a family member or friend a compliment. Compliments can be divided into five categories of thoughts or feelings:
admiration
reassurance
friendship
encouragement
liking or loving someone.
