Annie’s mouth gaped open. I’m sure I didn’t look much better.

“You weren’t the one who did this to us?” Annie asked.

Sybil blinked in surprise, and her face paled. “I knew you thought I did it. But no.” She held her hands up. “No. No. I’m not that kind of witch. Tell me what happened. From your side.”

Annie took over this part of the story. Her hands shook as she clasped them together in her lap. “We should have received our hereditary magic when we turned seventeen. Our birthday came and went. Nothing happened.”

I reached over and took her hand. She squeezed my fingers in a bruising grip. “A few months passed and soon it was time for us to go into the eleventh grade. But when we tried to register, we couldn’t. We kept getting error messages inside of the school system. So we went to the office.” Her voice wobbled. “It was like they didn’t know who we were anymore. If we asked questions about moving up, there was a … blankness in their face. It was like their eyes fogged up and they couldn’t think straight. But if we turned the conversation elsewhere, they knew who we were. But they told us we were still sophomores. When we argued, the fog came back.”

Sybil’s delicate brows knit together. “You could talk about anything else without the same effect?”

I nodded. “Yes. Classes as long as they were sophomore classes. If we mentioned anything about moving up or a birthday or anything moving us forward, it was like they forgot who we were.”

“Then we noticed we healed too fast. Cuts and bruises went away almost immediately. Harper got into a … crash. She should have died.”

“But I didn’t. We soon concluded we’d been the victim of a curse. Neither one of us appears to be aging. It’s like we’re stuck, forever 16.”

Sybil nodded. “Powerful work. I can smell it on you. But I don’t know if it’s actual immortality. I think if you were injured severely enough, you would die.” She shook her head. “I’m not positive, but I think what it does is slow everything down to an almost indeterminate pace. I’ll need to run a few tests. If it’s okay with you.”

Annie and I exchanged glances. “It’s okay if you think you can figure this out. Can you tell us more about this agency?”

Sybil sighed. “They handle all the legal magic users. When something like …” she paused. “When deaths occur in the magical community, they step in and handle the wards left behind. It’s disturbing no one has come forward and tried to claim you.”

“I don’t want to be claimed,” I said. “Annie and I are fine on our own.”

The thin press of her lips showed she didn’t agree with us. “I don’t know why the agency hasn’t sent for you, but I can make some discreet inquiries. All of this seems odd. They rarely make mistakes. Never of this caliber.” Her face turned thoughtful. “Do you have any idea who would have done this to you?”

We shook our heads in unison.
