They crept quietly as they could up the hardwood stairs, and each changed wordlessly into their nightgowns, facing away from each other.

When they sat on the bed it was in silence, each looking at the other with a whole host of unspoken words flitting between them.

“Tell me what you feel,” Frankie urged. “Please.”

A pink flush of shame crept over Marjorie’s face. “I feel everything I never felt for Harold.” Her voice dropped lower. “I feel attached to you. I feel close to you. I want to hold you.” She wilted at her own admission and looked down at the bedspread’s floral chenille pattern, running a nervous hand over its intricate stitchery. “I want you… to treat me like a wife.”

All the anxiousness fled in an instant.

The blossom of delight in Frankie was hard to contain and she laughed lightly and unintentionally. “I think I already do.”

“That’s not how I mean!” Marjorie said with reproach.

But Marjorie’s valiant vulnerability gave Frankie her own bravery back. The night air was suddenly sparkling instead of cold, the stars beyond the window were glowing rather than icy, the darkness cloaking them safely instead of cloaking their feelings. “Darling,” she said naturally, warmly, making Marjorie look up. “I don’t think loving each other is anything to be ashamed of.”

Marjorie’s fingers froze in their fretting exploration of the threads on the blanket.

“I really don’t think you know what I mean, Frankie,” she said helplessly.

“I think I do.”

Marjorie shook her head, unraveling further, visibly shrinking, but Frankie scooted close to her and took her hand.

Frankie could feel only hope. Only happiness. “I want more kisses goodnight. I want to kiss and caress you all over. I want a future with you, where we aren’t just mothers together, but life partners. Life partners who love each other. Marjorie, is that anything like what you want?”

Marj was staring at her in awe in the dark. But she didn’t deny any of it. “Frankie… you know we never could.”

“Why couldn’t we?”

“People would think we’re indecent, Frankie.”

“What people?” she laughed and waved around at the empty room, and the empty country night. “You said it yourself. You've fallen so far.” Marjorie’s defensiveness crumbled long enough for her to flash the faintest smile in remembrance. “Who’s here to judge you? And why do those people get to decide what’s right and wrong?”

“Well, it’s…” Marjorie fumbled. “It’s God himself who decided women should want to be with men.”

“I seem to remember a lot of men kissing other men in the Bible from the times my grandma made me sit through it! I think I remember Ruth and Naomi giving up their whole lives to be together too.”

“Ruth married a man in the end.”

“And stayed by Naomi’s side. Sounds like a cover to me.”

Marjorie looked like she couldn’t believe the sacrilege coming out of her mouth. “Frances Bannon!”

“I’m just saying. God didn’t seem to mind those two women making a life together, he didn’t seem to mind all those men kissing each other, and he sure put us in a funny place together.
