Roy dealt with this by simply not coming into work, at all. We tried to get him to come back. Mutt went over to his house every day, but it was useless. I called a couple of times. Roy came to the phone, but didn’t stay on long. Sorry, he said, there’s stuff I got to do. And then he’d hang up.

Late one morning I stopped by, I called and said I’m on my way. When I got there, Roy was gone. I had a long conversation with Tina. She said that not only Mutt but half of Roy’s family had been coming over, trying to talk him into going back to work. In fact, his two brothers had been by an hour before.

“I don’t know whether you know them, Dave and Ronnie,” said Tina. “They’re both in the department.”

“Yeah, I’ve met them,” I said. “Good guys.”

“They were just here, talking with Roy. They said the same thing his family’s been saying since Day One—they’re all behind him, one hundred percent.”

“And it doesn’t do any good.”

“Well, he appreciates it, but he still doesn’t want to go back to work.”

“Did his brothers tell him he’ll be fired?”

“Everybody tells him that. I’ve told him that. And you know what he says? ‘Good. The sooner the better.’”

“He should at least get a doctor’s note, Tina. You know, from a psychologist, saying he’s under stress. That way he can stay out for a while.”

“He knows that. He won’t do it.”

“He won’t even get a note?”

“I don’t think Roy wants to be a cop anymore. If you want my opinion.”

“That’s hard to believe.”

“Yes, it is. And it’s very sad, I’ll tell you that. But it’s like, whatever he had as a cop, is gone.”
