For the data from Table 7.6, the formula would be:
The resulting value would be 0.019733. 5 The value of Lambda varies from 0 to 1. In this case, then, we are only able to improve our prediction of offense seriousness by about 2 percent with information about the race of the offender. That is a very low value, and probably would not be helpful.
Conclusion
Conducting bivariate analyses without a statistical package can be time-consuming. But it is an important part of crime analysis. Graphs are great, but you will often have to have some support or interpretation of the graphs to have any real influence from your findings. That is where univariate and bivariate analyses come into play. If you have a graph in a report or a presentation, you may have a greater impact if you include information about the central value of the data and generally how the data are arranged (form). Even information about how spread out the data are may help in your presentation. Likewise, if you need to examine two variables, tables are often a great way to display the findings (especially if the variables are categorical). If you feel the need to add a table to your report or presentation, or to examine the relationship between two variables, then understanding if they are statistically significant and the strength of their relationship is important. Take the time to do the bivariate analyses.
