With Magritte, separation is simulated to such a degree that viewers cannot help but view these images and read these words according to the conventions of classical painting. This, of course, is the trap that prevents the viewer from realizing that the image has been invaded by the surrounding words. Again, Foucault’s comparison with Klee is instructive.

In order to arrange his plastic signs, Klee wove a new space. Magritte lets the old space of representation reign, but only on the surface, because it is nothing but a polished stone, bearing figures and words: beneath, there is nothing. (TNP, 41; CP, 56–57; The translation has been modified)
