Chapter Seventeen

I continued to eyeball the message as Rochelle came back with a cup of tea.

“Honey, what you got there? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Rochelle’s words swathed around me like wind forced around a mountain. It felt claustrophobic.

“Just gonna go in my room.” I got up and, without even glancing at her, left for my bedroom.

I catapulted the phone onto my bed like it was infected with some deadly virus.

“Adele, you okay?” Rochelle called.

“Just getting changed,” I shouted back and then slammed my bedroom door shut.

I went over and perched on the end of my bed. My head was spinning, reeling with a thousand possibilities. Harrowing possibilities. I was getting heady. Endeavouring to comprehend why Jason’s phone was at our flat was actually making me nauseous. The only way that phone could have landed on the living room floor was either by it being brought in by Rose, or Jason had been in the flat whilst I was asleep. Both options were disturbing.

I picked up the phone to have a more intricate look. The messages glowed at me mordantly, like they were laughing at the fact I did not understand what was meant to be obvious. I banished them from the screen by tapping at a few other icons and inadvertently brought up the call history. The top line caught my attention. A call to 999.

What the . . . ?

Had Jason been here and seen Rose bleeding? Had he seen her in the streets, making her way here and somehow given her his phone to call for help? Had he just been here snooping around and dropped it? One other notion came to me, but I discarded it before I could ponder further. I soon realised that Rose was the only person who could answer this.

Calling the police right now was the obvious solution, but I was reluctant because of whom the owner of the phone was. If it was anyone else’s phone, I would have, but it was Jason’s. I couldn’t call the police on Jason, even if he was innocently embroiled. The fact was, I knew if the police got involved with him, it would destabilise him. I could lose our connection.

Rochelle called through my door. “Adele, are you ready? Your cup of tea is getting cold.”

I guessed I couldn’t hide in here much longer without suspicion arising. “Coming.”

Sometime later, Rochelle and Liam climbed into the back of my car, and I stepped into the driver’s seat. I was wearing a fresh set of clothes—a simple white T-shirt and black jeans. I’d pulled my hair into a side pony. It was still sticky with blood because I hadn’t had time to wash my hair. Jason’s phone was in my duffel bag. Technically, as it was evidence, I wasn’t meant to be carrying it with me, but I’d already smeared it with my fingerprints, so it didn’t matter.

Our automatic seatbelts buckled us in, and I opted for auto-drive. The drive to the hospital felt like the most painfully elongated journey I’d ever taken.
