Conquered whom? So far Tony had not found an answer to the question though she was aware that she could not postpone doing so indefinitely. Day by day, Carter showed more clearly his feeling for her. She’d have to make up her mind. He was, she thought, one of the best-looking men she knew. He had liked her when she was, as he believed, a domestic servant; he accepted her now as a penniless girl struggling to establish a small bookshop. It wasn’t, at any rate, the Carew money, for he knew nothing of her background, that attracted him, and she had always been aware that her money was bound to be an important factor with the men who displayed interest in her.

His manner, for all its growing warmth and tenderness, had been maintained at a level of easy, happy companionship. And he had done for Mrs. Perry what no one else could do. He had been as good as his word. The night after his impromptu call at the bookshop a Mr. Revlin had telephoned and asked to see Mrs. Perry about her work. He had come and had been, Rosamund related exultantly, most enthusiastic. In February he was going to give her a one-man show at his gallery, and as soon as the Christmas rush was over, her mother was going to devote all her time to her painting.

“What’s he like?” Tony asked.

“Short and stocky with a Van Dyke beard, and a very impressive manner. At first I thought he was rather stuffy and artificial but afterwards I thought he was a prince among men.”

Tony laughed, then sobered. “We’ll have to handle things,” she told Mrs. Perry, “so you won’t do another scrap of work in the shop.”

Rosamund agreed. “Thank heaven, Tony, you decided not to keep open in the evenings or we’d never get any Christmas shopping done. How is yours going?”

“I’ll finish it all tonight,” Tony said with determination.

“But you’re so tired.”

“Choosing things for people you like is such fun that I won’t be tired after I’ve started,” Tony assured her.

It was getting started that was the problem. She took a long hot bath to bake out the tiredness, gulped a hasty sandwich and a glass of milk over Mrs. Haven’s protests.

“My dear, you mustn’t go out without more food than that.”

“But there’s so little time,” Tony said, “and the stores will be jammed.”

“Well, for this once—but if you’re going to neglect yourself while I’m away—”

“I won’t. I promise.”

Tony bundled up and set out for her evening of Christmas shopping. There had been a great deal of discussion about Mrs. Haven going away. For several weeks she had had a hacking cough and she had been losing weight. Her doctor insisted that she go South for at least two weeks.

“It’s not necessary. Anyhow,” she insisted, “I’m not going to leave you alone in this house.”

“But there’s nothing to be afraid of,” Tony had assured her. “I shan’t mind a bit.”

“I don’t like it. I feel responsible for you.
