By the time I get back it’s almost five and I’m drained emotionally. The entire way back all I could think about was Jeff. Why would Royce tell him where she lived? Or about the money? Hell, she hasn’t even told me about it yet. I’m not gonna push her tonight though. As much as I want to,5 we’ve already fought today and yesterday. We need a break.

I walk through the door I hear laughter coming from the living room. I drop my keys in the bowl by the door and reach for the box in the top drawer of the stand that’s there. I put a box there for my gun, Royce suggested it and I completely agreed. It’s locked by a code that only I know. Once it’s away and my badge is off I make my way to the living room. I can’t help but smile when I find Boxer lying across Royce’s lap while Kady sits next to them. I walk quietly to the couch and lean down laying a kiss on Royce’s head. “Hey,” I say.

She jumps a little making Boxer wake up, but once he sees it’s me he goes back down. “You scared me,” Royce says. Kady is fast asleep and apparently the laughing was from the TV.

“Sorry baby,” I kiss her again before going to the kitchen. “You hungry?”

“I just ordered pizza,” her voice is closer and I realize she’s followed me. When I turn around she’s standing nearly a foot from me. “Is she in—” she’s also not looking at me.

It takes two strides for me to get to her. “Royce, I didn’t put her in jail.”

She takes a deep breath. “I got that restraining order after she broke into my house a year ago. She’d left a note so it was justified, but I never pressed charges because…”

“She’s your mom,” I wrap my arm around her waist and pull her towards me. “I wouldn’t have arrested her. Not when I know you and how much you care.”

Her hands move up my chest “I hate that I do,” her head falls against my chest and I kiss her forehead, holding her in my arms. “She never did anything but hurt me. When I was younger I was always hungry, always sad and alone but, sometimes she would come through and show me the mom I deserved. One time she woke me up in the middle of the night and dragged me to the car.” I tighten my hold on her. “Not literally, cave man,” I loosen just a little. “She took me to the mountains and we spent the day playing in the snow and skiing. It was an amazing trip that I won’t ever forget. At least the beginning of it was. Later that night, she left me in the car while she went into the grocery store. I had an iPod that had games so I was distracted for awhile.” I feel the tears start to soak my shirt. This kills me.
