Chapter Twenty-Nine

Prison blues

Sawyer

My head shoots off the back seat the moment I feel the SUV come to a stop.

“Coffee!” I yell before I’ve even opened my eyes or know where I am.

Leo and Sammy cackle at me from the front seat.

“Good morning, sleeping beauty,” Leo teases.

“Fuck off, you giant motherfucker,” I toss back without mirth and scrub the sleep from my eyes. “Where are we?”

Taking in the parking lot around me, I see the answer to the question before they can respond.

“We’ve arrived at our destination,” Sammy says in the monotone voice of the GPS lady.

She’s doing voices now, which makes me happier than I have any right to be. Like I’m rubbing off on her.

Hmm. Rubbing off. Like I did last night.

Come on, dick. Don’t get hard with her brother around. That won’t end well for either of us.

I check my watch. Looks like I got three solid hours of sleep on the ride up here from Clearwater. Sweet. I should be good to go for another twenty hours. Let’s do this thing.

While I yawn and shake off the last of my grogginess, Leo turns to his sister and puts his hand on her arm. “You sure you’re up to this, kid? No shame in changing your mind.”

“I’m fine, Leo. Trust me. I’ve got this.” Her voice is steady and calm. She shows no trace of fear, and since I can’t see her face from this vantage point, I can only assume she’s not just putting on a show for Leo. If she is scared, then she’s hiding it well.

After pulling my sunglasses out of my hair, I slide them on and get out of the car, feeling the crack of my bones when I arch my back to get out the kinks.

Sleeping in the back of the SUV — I recommend you avoid it at all costs.

“Your weapon,” Leo reminds me, pointing to the glove box where he’s secured his firearm.

Oh right. No weapons inside the prison.

“Sorry. Still groggy. Think we can get some coffee in there?” I ask while adding my gun to the box. Once it’s inside, Leo locks the door closed.

“Here.” Sammy hands me a small black coffee. “Chug it on the way in. I doubt you can bring in outside drinks.”

“Oh, you got me coffee? I’m touched. Will you marry me?” I kid, playfully.

I’ve always teased and flirted with beautiful women around him, and Leo expects a certain level of flirtatious sarcasm from me — even with his sister to a certain extent. If I stop now, he’ll figure out something is up. And I can’t let that happen. Not until she’s safe.

I finish the small cup of mediocre nectar in three large gulps and toss the empty cup into a trash bin near the entrance. We file into the prison visitor’s center with Leo on point and Sammy safely between us. My heart rate increases with each step. Something about exposing her to the presence of that dirtbag is clawing at my chest from the inside out.
