On 14 July a letter arrived at Grange House addressed to Miss Mair Parsons. It carried a postmark from New York, USA. Instantly Mair recognized the writing as Rhiannon’s and her hand shook with both excitement and anticipation as she struggled to open it.

Dear Mair,

When Gus and I returned to New York on 20 June, I was pleased to find your letter waiting for me at the Palace Theatre. I, like you, felt saddened by the way we parted. We both said things we regret – I suppose it’s what sisters do. I am so pleased that you made contact again. I think of you every day, not just as a sister, but as a true friend. That said, I cannot deny the disappointment I felt to find out that, instead of returning home with Frank to be reunited with Catherine and the family, you decided to go off to London on what, I too would have believed to be a ‘wild goose chase’ in search of your mother and Harry Stone.

I was truly sorry to hear of her death. Yet I am relieved to hear that you have your newly-made friends from the Salvation Army and what sounds like a caring landlady to help you through it. I admit there was no love lost between Nellie and myself, but I would never have wished the poor woman such a sad end. To think of her being knocked down by a horse and carriage just yards away from the New Gaiety Theatre where I was then appearing – my name up in lights and visible to all, made me think that she may have been on her way to see me. Was it her intention to seek you out – to make peace with you? I like to think so. After all, people have been known to change for the better. I do hope this thought gives you some comfort. Mair, I need you to promise me that you will stay away from Harry Stone … let your mother’s death be the end of it. I suggest you get yourself home to Wales.

The good news is that, with my American tour almost at an end, Gus and I plan to return to Britain on 20 December. We have booked an overnight stay at The Grand Hotel, Southampton, before heading to Wales. Our first stop is Cardiff, so that Gus can finalize my contract at the Empire Theatre – I’m to top the bill of an eight-week variety show, due to start Monday 3 February, at the end of the pantomime season. As usual, we shall base ourselves at the Angel Hotel. After that we intend to head for Ponty, to see Ethel and the family in time for Christmas and … our wedding!

Yes, I’ve finally agreed to let Gus make an honest woman of me. It would make me so happy if you could be there to welcome us home and to join in the celebrations.

Your loving sister,

Rhi
