Chapter Nineteen

Roark awoke in the dimness of breaking day to find his arm again draped around a bundle. But this morning Alyss, not the cushion, pillowed him. He was content to study the woman at his side in the faint strains of early dawn until she began to thrash around. Her dream must be troublesome. He tightened his arm.

She snuggled into him, the press of her curves reminding his body of their real wedding night. He ran his hand lightly over her back, caressing her bottom, before he stopped himself. No need to awaken her yet. She was bound to be sore from her first time. He’d been the first, after all. The knowledge made him feel smug.

Alyss had charmed his men at their meal the night before. She had even laughed when Alain related some of his milder stories of Roark’s time at Cantleigh. When she left the gathering, Roark had pressed his mouth to the side of her neck in a brief farewell. She’d been startled, but he vowed she’d leaned into the kiss before turning away. His hand had even brushed the side of her breast, causing her face to redden.

And then, later. Surely the strangest wedding night in Christendom. How would she react this morning?

The brush of eyelashes against Roark’s chest signaled his prickly wife was awake.

Her muscles tensed. Then her clenched breath broke free in a soft but controlled exhale that slid across the right side of his chest. His body hardened, and he fought the impulse to bring her lips to his nipple. The bud swelled tighter when he thought of her warm, wet tongue on it, and his cock jumped.

Rearing back, Roark looked into her now-wide eyes alert in the dimness. “Good morning, wife.”

“Good…” Her voice broke. She cleared her throat and tried again. “Good morning.”

He lifted his left arm, almost numb from her lying on it, and drew her nearer. His right hand slid to her throat, then around to the back of her neck. Lowering his head, he brushed her lips with his. Neither of them closed their eyes. Hers were startled, wary. Ah, she’d remembered.

“How do you feel?” he whispered.

“I’m fine.” She placed a hand on his chest to push away, but the movement brought their lower bodies closer. Roark’s hips jerked forward in a reflexive action. He drew his partially open mouth along her clenched jaw, to her neck, where she seemed to enjoy his attention the night before.

Tension eased from her as he nuzzled, the tip of his tongue dotting its way to her ear then to the sensitive flesh behind. She shivered. He pulled her closer.

He exhaled and against his chest, one firmed nipple grew taller. Kissing his way up the side of the breast, he captured the tip in his mouth, pulling, sucking until his mouth was full of soft, tasty woman.

Arching, Alyss gasped. Using his forehead to nudge her shoulder back, he released that breast and trailed the tip of his tongue to the other. Her fingers stroked into his hair, a tentative touch.
