Chapter Eleven

THE ACCUSATION

Han slept very little. Somewhere in the night, Maggie got up and put on a nightgown, but she said nothing to him before she got back into bed and went to sleep. He reminded himself to look at the positive aspects of this situation. They had come far, and surely time would soften the blow of what he’d told her. At least it was in the open now, and he could stop dreading the conversation. He certainly couldn’t take her back to Horstberg without her knowing the full truth. He only prayed they could both learn to live with it.

Feeling restless, Han finally got up just past dawn and got dressed. He felt an uneasiness that he couldn’t explain, although it was difficult to tell if it had to do with Maggie or if his instincts were telling him something more. Perhaps he was fearing that Nik Koenig would yet catch up with them again. He began quietly packing their things, thinking it might be best if they left this town right after breakfast.

Han was pleased to see that Maggie slept soundly despite his being up and about, and he took time every few minutes to admire her, wishing there weren’t dark clouds hanging over their future together.

He couldn’t explain why his eyes moved to the doorknob when it twitched, and a chill of fear rushed down his spine. He’d barely found his pistol before the door flew open. In a split second the gun was knocked out of his hand, and some foul-smelling lug had both Han’s arms pulled painfully behind his back. An equally gruesome character headed straight for the bed, pulling Maggie, dazed and frightened, into his arms. Han fought with everything he had to break free, turning to land a healthy blow against his assailant’s jaw. It momentarily stunned the man, and Han turned to get Maggie. But immediately, he was met with a fist in his own jaw, and he reeled backward, right into the grip he’d just escaped from. His head swimming in pain, Han was barely aware of Maggie crying out to him as repeated, painful blows assaulted his face and then his belly while he was held helpless from behind.

Maggie couldn’t believe what was happening. She struggled with all her strength and managed to worm her way out of the arms that held her just as Nik Koenig came into the room. He began hitting Han over and over, and she ran to him, trying to pull him away.

“No, Nik—please,” she screamed. “Please don’t!”

“I’m not letting him get you away from me again, my sweet,” he said, relentlessly hitting Han over and over while Han’s arms were held behind him by another man. Memories of how she’d once believed that Nik loved her and would rescue her from Han now made her sick.

“No, Nik,” Maggie cried, “you don’t understand.” She kept pulling at him, but he paid no attention. “He’s my husband, Nik.”

Nik paused briefly and turned to Maggie in angry astonishment.
