Vajrayana sadhanas are intended to remedy human alienation from the totality of what is: the energies that constitute the play of the universe, and their corresponding active presence within the human microcosm. Thus, sadhanas are performed at times when interplay between human embodiment and the surrounding cosmos is most accessible-times when certain energy configurations allow ready communication between microcosm and macrocosm. Guru Padmasambhava promised that he would come to those performing his sadhana on certain days of the lunar month. At such times, the interplay of inner and outer reveals the connection between the human and what is often called the divine. Through rightly directed action, this harmony can be nurtured into a virtual unity.
While based on the teachings of the Mahayana regarding the true nature of samsara and nirvana, the Vajrayana gives these teachings precise content and offers the skillful means needed to act according to this knowledge. Ritual sadhana makes it possible to master the interplay of form and formlessness, action and wisdom. Through mastery of the psychic energies of the body and the range of meditative practice, the truth of 'emptiness' is transformed from a noble ideal into a concrete and dynamic reality. The six perfections are no longer an externally imposed moral code but an integral aspect of reality. Generating bodhicitta becomes a yogic practice for transforming the nature of mind in this moment. The confession of faults expresses the realization that past, present, and future-the field for the play of karma-are immediately accessible now, so that past karmic defilements can be freely transmuted. Taking refuge takes on esoteric significance, as the object of this practice is ultimately experienced as being identical with ourselves. The traditional dedication of merit becomes more than a pious wish-the joy of realization, expressed through the sadhana, becomes the vehicle for acting effectively on behalf of all sentient beings. Sadhana forms a bridge through which the vows and intention of the Bodhisattva are fully and realistically integrated with every motion and expression, however simple or mundane. The very essence of the Buddha's teachings, the pulse and flow of reality, are to be found within the mandalas of the Vajrayana sadhana.
