Penalty kick

As we explained earlier, a penalty kick is awarded when an infringement that would otherwise result in a direct free kick takes place within the penalty area.

The penalty shot is usually taken by the member of the team who is best qualified to take penalties. Every team has a player who excels in this role, and naturally they are valuable members of the team.

Once a player has been nominated to take the kick, the ball is placed on the penalty spot inside the penalty area, and all the other players must stand outside the area as the penalty is taken. You will remember this includes standing outside the D at the edge of the penalty area to ensure all players are standing at least 10 yards (9 m) away from the ball until the kick is taken.
