‘You realise tomorrow’s the anniversary of when Noah left us?’ Georgie asked on the way to Akaroa on Saturday morning as Blake drove out of the cheese factory premises where they’d bought a selection of the famous cheeses to nibble later on.

‘I do.’ His reply was sharp.

Shouldn’t she have mentioned it? But how could she not when it was such a part of who she was now? Bet it was the same for Blake, even if he didn’t want to admit it. ‘Thirteen years. A long time, yet sometimes it doesn’t seem so.’

‘Yes.’ Softer tone this time.

‘I don’t know what you think, but I believe we’re on the same page over Noah and how badly we were both hurt.’

Blake placed a hand on her thigh and gave her a rueful smile. ‘Georgie, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be so abrupt. Keep talking about him. Please.’

‘Not if it upsets you.’ But then that was back to hiding and she’d started moving away from those reactions. He needed to too. ‘I don’t know why but being with you has made it easier to talk about him for the first time ever.’ Not that they’d actually spoken much regarding Noah, but she’d begun to feel she could if she wanted to. When she did she didn’t want Blake making it difficult.

‘It’s been a taboo subject for so long I automatically pull down the shutters, even now when I’m feeling more relaxed than I ever have about him. This is good for me, and hopefully for you. In this together, so to speak.’

‘Absolutely. I understand what you’re saying. It’s like me thinking my actions were to protect Mum and Dad when I now accept it was all about hiding my own pain. Plus my fear of being hurt so much again.’ She glanced across to her friend. Yes, they were definitely friends, no matter what. ‘Since you turned up in my life again it’s as though a huge weight has lifted. I’m no longer feeling crushed.’

Blake pulled the car off the road and killed the motor before turning to take her hands in his. ‘That would have to be the loveliest thing I’ve heard in for ever. Thank you. I’m starting to have similar feelings about everything.’ He leaned close enough to kiss her, gentle yet exhilarating.

Georgie closed her eyes and accepted his kiss as though she’d never been kissed before. It gave her a sense of kindness, wonder and relief all rolled in together. It was as though she’d finally landed on her feet, had found what she’d been searching for over the last thirteen years without knowing what she was doing. ‘Blake,’ she whispered between them. ‘I’m glad you came home.’

Blake kissed her lightly. ‘I’m glad I came to town too. Otherwise I’d never have got this close to you. I am so thankful to you for being there for all of us, and more so for how we seem to be getting along so well.’

‘It’s been a bonus, for sure.
