“CHELLE, WHAT A perfect evening this turned out to be,” Sarah said warmly as she dragged a chair from the center of one of the classrooms to the side. It had been an enjoyable, relaxing affair, at least for her. Chelle would undoubtedly disagree. Her poor friend had been frantic much of the night, making sure everything ran smoothly. In addition, she had to now prepare for a new year of school, as her students would begin arriving throughout the following week.

As it turned out, Bethia’s Mr. Gyles, had returned earlier than expected and was able to attend after all. He escorted the family in his carriage, and, at the evening’s conclusion, when Sarah had expressed a desire to stay behind and help her friend, gallantly offered to take her father and sister home then return for Sarah at a later time.

The more Sarah came to know Mr. Gyles, the more she respected, even liked him. Always the gentleman, he was enjoyable to be around and genuinely seemed to love her sister. With any luck, their father would soon relent and allow the pair to marry.

Sarah dragged another chair to the side of the small room. The school employed only a few servants, and they were busy elsewhere. Not ones to sit idly around when there was work to be done, the two women began setting the room back to rights.

Actually, it was Chelle’s example that had taught Sarah to be more considerate of the help. As a schoolmistress, Chelle understood what it felt like to have a great deal of responsibility placed on her shoulders and was always quick to unburden another, no matter their station. Many frowned on her for doing so, but Sarah thought it an admirable trait.

She’d never forget one night at the Marine Pavilion years earlier, when a footman had backed into a guest, lost his balance, and dropped a tray of apple tarts. Chelle had immediately come to his aid, helping to retrieve the fallen tarts, only to stand back up and find several people gaping at her in astonishment.

Instead of succumbing to embarrassment, as Sarah would have done, Chelle had smiled. “I heard that was the last tray, and I do so love apple tarts.” She’d proceeded to pop one of the fallen tarts into her mouth.

Prinny had roared with laughter and continued to tease her for months afterwards, always providing extra trays of apple tarts for Miss Ellington so she needn’t scrape them off the floor.

“Do you truly think it went smoothly?” Chelle asked. “It’s tricky to host the annual benefit here at the school, mostly because we lack a large room for entertaining. I’ll be grateful when the renovations are finished on the pavilion, and we can prey on Prinny’s goodwill once more.”

Chelle looked striking in her pale-blue gown with a matching ribbon in her hair. Normally, her coiffures drew attention, but not this evening. Chelle had chosen a simple knot with thin braids woven throughout.

“I actually like the system you developed,” Sarah confided.
