Fox watched as the two brothers walked into view. They were clearly identical twins, but Vorhanâs hair was wild and open, whereas Velan kept his pulled back into a raven-dark ponytail. Their brows were wide and pronounced, like battering rams on the bow of a Viking ship. Their eyes were dull blue but wide and wild, adrenaline surging through their bodies, their Fatherâs words clearly finding their mark in the two menâs hungry hearts.
Fox knew the look of a man who was capable of violence, of murder, of brutality without concern for morality. His entire life and career had been about meeting such men face to face on the battlefield. All his training and preparation was about making damn sure Fox put out the dark light in his enemyâs eyes.
These men both had that look in their eyes.
But they were not his real enemy.
And so Fox had no intention of killing these two burly bearded brothers.
He wouldnât do it.
It wouldnât be right.
They might be hulking beasts with fists the size of cannonballs and murder in their eyes, but now that Fox knew how theyâd been raised, what theyâd been put through, how theyâd been brainwashed and manipulated by their own parents, there was no way he could kill them. It wouldnât be right.
But at the same time he had to fight, Fox thought as he crept up to the top of the rocky hillock shielding them from view.
He glanced back down at Fay. She was looking up at him, waiting for him to give her a sign, a signal, an order, a command.
Fox smiled down at her. He wondered how much she was remembering. Sheâd told him it was bits and pieces, more feelings than images, scattered and splintered, like sunlight shining through bulletholes in a wall.
Fay smiled back at him. Her eyes were shining vivid blue, like Bensonâs words had flipped on a switch in her soul, made her feel something strong, emotions that had been building up in her year after year as she watched the men brutalize each other for a taste of the women, watched the women prepare for their own weeklong battle to seize their shot at life.
To avoid death and the gruesome way that it came for the unchosen, unlucky girl.
âFlames,â Fay had whispered to him earlier, her eyes still wide from what Benson had said earlier. âI see flames and fire. There is a fire on the night of the Solstice. It burns for a week, a reminder of the fate in store for the girl who does not succeed.â
âFayâs right,â Benson had informed them over the phone. âItâs in Florainneâs paper, and Kaiser says it was in the dead guyâs notes over the years too. Florainne and Grimmson got it from Viking tradition. Virgin sacrifices never go out of style, I suppose.â
âThe old Viking sacrifices were voluntary,â Fay had snapped back. âAlso, the loser girls are not virgins when they are burned. For one week they do whatever they can to be chosen, remember? Everything and anything.
