Chapter 18

Ronin

When I wake, Kyra is still asleep. It is early outside and the storm is beginning to clear. I walk to the bridge and stare out the viewscreen. The entire forest is blanketed in white. Snow still falls heavily outside, but the sun is now visible through the dark clouds overhead.

I suspect we will be able to leave tomorrow. Although I am eager to reach my people, I cannot deny this has been a nice respite. This ship is easily defendable and I have enjoyed the time I’ve been able to spend with Kyra.

Every day, I learn something new about her. I admire her strength and her ability to adapt quickly to each situation as it presents itself. She is determined to learn how to read and write in my language. I have begun showing her basic symbols and glyphs on my wristband, and I’m surprised by how much she has already learned.

As if my very thoughts have summoned her, she appears on the bridge. Her smile falls when she notices the storm is beginning to dissipate outside the viewscreen.

I frown. “You are upset that the weather is clearing.”

“I just… this was a nice break from everything, you know. I was getting comfortable here.”

I hate that I cannot guarantee that where we are going will be as well-equipped as this place. Here we are warm, there is running water and electricity, beds and more importantly… security.

For now, I remind myself.

I am still concerned about the previous occupants and why they are no longer here. I doubt they would have left this place willingly.

“I was as well,” I offer. “But if my people are able to transmit a distress signal, then perhaps they have working technology like we have here.”

“I hope so.” She smiles. “It’s been so lovely having warm water for showers, and a nice comfy bed to sleep in every night.”

It is instinct to want to provide the best for one’s mate. If we were on Mosaura, I would spare no expense making a home for her that had every possible comfort imaginable. I wish that I could promise her that where we are going is better than here, but I cannot.

I take comfort in the fact that when we find my people she will be well-protected among my fellow Mosauran warriors.

“When do you think we’ll be able to leave?” she asks, interrupting my thoughts.

“Tomorrow morning, perhaps.” I glance at our surroundings. “I believe we should begin packing everything we wish to take so we can make an early start if the weather is clear when we awaken.”

“I agree.”

Together, we make our way through the ship, creating an inventory of items to take with us. I’m surprised when she wishes to only take one extra blanket and fur. I had planned to take at least three.

“Three is too many,” she argues. “We can’t take that much.”

“But you will be cold,” I counter.

“I’ll manage. Besides, I don’t want to weigh you down with so many items when I can make do with less.
