I hadn’t even planned to listen in on them, but I couldn’t help overhearing them as I’d gone for a walk around the school, stretch my legs for a moment. When I heard her voice, I got on the roof, standing a while off, but neither were paying attention to me.

The pain in her eyes, in her voice, it was too much for me. She described watching a friend almost kill another one of her friends and Gale just sat there. She was mourning the loss of someone she cared about and he was willing to put her through an even worse loss. She was... She had no idea about him. I had to let her know, because he’s part of her hoard and if he’d sacrifice himself like that... No. She wouldn’t survive that, none of us would survive that.

Topaz is looking from me to Sophia and back, before he finally lets me go. “The fuck happened? What did she need to know?”

Sophia carefully gets up, taking a deep breath, before she looks at me, ignoring Topaz, her eyes filled with anger. “Why do you even care? What’s it to you? What’s his past to you?”

I felt like I’d been doing the right thing, but now I’m not so sure anymore and I just wish I could take that pain from her eyes. “It’s not his past, it’s our future that I’m worried about. He’s trained to be like that, he’s not going to give that up, and then what? What happens if you lose one of your hoard?” I don’t want to hurt her, but I’m in too deep now. The way she reacted to Gale threatening me, I’m terrified of what would happen if someone really killed one of us.

Topaz pushes at my shoulder, a little too hard to be playful, his eyes angry. “So you nearly got yourself killed by a witch to prove a point? What point?” He keeps looking between us, but it’s only Sophia who I care about.

She shakes her head, filled with sadness, and reaches out to me, closing her eyes. “What you said about finding him, is that true?”

I carefully take her hand, even though she doesn’t have to touch me to know my feelings. “Yes. I was part of the group who found him. He was almost gone, but our healers got to him on time. He was out of it, but we put him to sleep so that he could recover, and we coordinated with the other rebel groups to make sure he’d get back safely. He was the only one who survived from his division. We looked. We...” The memory of the biting scent, the scent of the venom spreading through bodies, it clogs up my throat and I swallow against the bile. “We did our best. I’m sorry.”

She nods, squeezing my hand. “Thank you.” Her voice is barely more than a whisper. Then she lets go, walking back down the roof and to the door, before disappearing.
