About 30 minutes passed before I gathered the courage to even take one step towards the thing. It was really strange. I was basically next to the thing and it never looked at me. I wondered if it knew I was there, but was just waiting for me to do something. What if it was pretending to play, while reading me all along? It was possible. It was an alien.

I made a deal with myself. I take a deep breath in and then you step. I agreed, and took one step to him. Before I took another, I paused. I hoped that it would hear me and turn around, but it didn’t. I took another step. I ended up walking all the way up to the thing and it still hadn’t faced me. I crouched down to its level. I said “Hi.”

The thing shot up and turned to face me. I think I startled it. It stared right into my eyes. I stared right back into its’ rosewood colored eyes. It opened its’ mouth but no words came out. It crawled towards me until it was about a foot away from my face. I focused on trying to keep breathing.

It seemed to be examining my face. It stared at my eyes for a moment, then moved to my hair, my forehead, my nose, my lips, then back to my eyes. It lifted its’ hand and reached out for my face. It touched my nose with its’ index finger, and drew a line down onto my lips.

I was a little terrified, wondering if the soot was dangerous. I hoped I wouldn’t forget and lick my lips.

It moved his finger across my lips slowly, and gently. I felt a rush of emotion. It had a faint smile.

He lifted his finger from my lips, then along with the rest of his fingers, brushed my cheek. His fingers felt so warm. I closed my eyes for a few seconds, I think. When I opened them, I squinted at him, wondering what it was trying to do. It squinted back.

I lifted my hand and held it into mid-air, so I wouldn’t surprise him. He looked at my hand. I reached out my hand and then touched his cheek. His cheek was warm too. While looking directly at me, he tilted his head and pinned my fingers between his cheek and shoulder.

I didn’t understand what he was doing, but I figured it was some sort of greeting. He lifted his head and stood up. I followed. He looked back to the rock that he came out of for a while, then looked back at me. He smiled. “Lalo” he said.

I wiped my lips, trying to get rid of some of the soot. “Lalo?” I repeated.

“Lalo.”

I patted my chest and said, “Marli.”

He patted his chest, “Marli.”

“No.” I shook my head. I pat my chest again, “Marli.” I walked up to him and put my hand on his chest, “Lalo.”

He touched my chest, “Marli.”

I nodded.

He nodded.

I smiled.

He smiled.
