CHAPTER 14

KAILEY

I DUCKED DOWN AUTOMATICALLY—LIKE she was going to somehow know that someone was looking at her from above.

Of course, I realized a moment later, all it was going to take for her to know that there were Fae looking down on her was for the demon she was talking with to tell her. And I was quite certain that it was going to do exactly that any moment now, if only to tell her why there had been five demons and there was now only one.

Wait. Why was a Fae speaking to a demon?

Why had Koshe acted like he knew that particular Fae?

I sat up a bit and looked at him, to find him still staring down at her like he’d seen a real live ghost.

“Who is that? And why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?” I hissed.

I turned and peeked one eye out over the rim of the roof again, looking down on her. She was beautiful, whoever she was. Long, coiling black hair and equally black eyes. Porcelain skin. A lithe, willowy figure.

At least a foot taller than me.

“She is,” he said, sounding very resigned, “my aunt.”

Okay, this was news to me. “You have an aunt?”

He cast a jaded look at me. “I did. She has been banned from the family.”

I almost laughed, but then I remembered that we were definitely not in a situation that called for laughing. “And what, exactly, did she do to deserve that?”

His gaze turned dark so quickly that I didn’t see it happen. One moment I was staring into bright, silvery eyes, and the next, those eyes were so dark a gray as to be almost black.

I’d never seen them anything but silver before. Seeing them dark enough to match his hair changed his entire face. Made him dangerous.

“She killed my parents,” he said coldly.

“What?”

I knew the story. His parents had died when he was younger, victims to what looked like bad food. They’d died quickly—too quickly to leave any plans for their young son’s care. He’d been too young to take the throne on his own, so...

“The aunt that stepped in as your regent,” I said, remembering. “That’s her?”

One nod from Koshe. “She was my regent, and I worshipped the ground she walked on. She was a second mother to me. A version of the mother I could barely remember. She was everything to me—and she might still have a role in my reign. But shortly after I came to the throne, my closest adviser turned up evidence that she had actually orchestrated my parents’ deaths.” He glanced down at her again, and when his eyes came back to mine, they were a murky, heartbroken gray. “She killed my parents.”

I stared at him for a moment, trying to take in what he was saying, and the sorrow on his face. And then, so suddenly that it took me by surprise, my entire body flooded with an anger so hot, so burning, that it left no room for anything else.
