Chapter 11

Saturday, February 17, 10:40 a.m.

Cori awoke Saturday morning and scribbled a note to Geneva telling her he would check on her later. As he placed the note on her nightstand, his eyes landed on a jewelry box. During his fits of sleeping he remembered the pear-shaped diamond earring he’d found outside the office door. He checked to make sure Geneva was still sleeping. He hated to be snooping, and it wasn’t like he didn’t trust or believe her. The last thing she needed was another piece of evidence stacked against her.

Thank goodness, the jewelry box wasn’t like the one his sisters had that played music when opened. Geneva’s jewelry box resembled a tiny chest with drawers. He slowly pulled out drawers. Geneva wore a lot of gold earrings, mainly hoops. There were some sterling silver pieces and pearls but there were no diamonds. If she had some, maybe she kept them someplace else. Cori really hoped she didn’t own a pair.

He walked over to Geneva who appeared to be sound asleep. For a few seconds he stared at her, before kissing her cheek. Then he slipped out of the bedroom, feeling guilty. His guilt wasn’t about the snooping. There was a determination in him to protect. What really knocked him for a loop was that he’d considered concealing the earring if he found it.

How crazy was that! Either he was that much in love or he’d lost his marbles.

Cori nearly jumped out of his skin when he caught sight of Lillian in the hallway. It had been pretty late when he and Geneva went to her room, but he couldn’t recall hearing the roommate’s arrival home. It was Friday night and most young people partied and socialized. After a stressful week, he preferred his video games.

“Morning.” She commented with a smirk.

“Morning.” He mumbled as he headed toward the front door. It closed with a click behind him. He stopped by his own place to take a shower. It was still not nine o’clock yet, and Cori needed a bit of his own therapy. Normally, if Jax or Noble were available, they would hit the basketball court. Jax was still out of town, and the last thing Cori wanted was to see the concern etched on his best friend’s face.

The situation last night really brought home to Cori that he was stuck between his best friend and his girlfriend. Noble had to do what he needed to do for the investigation, but Cori couldn’t let Geneva go down for something he sincerely believed she didn’t do.

So was she being set up or was the evidence really all circumstantial?

There were too many things not adding up, like the cameras and how someone else had to be in the house. Geneva’s gun being missing just flat out didn’t make any sense.

Cori guided his 4Runner into the driveway of the home where he grew up, knowing it was the perfect place to be on a Saturday morning. He headed around to the back to enter the kitchen through the patio.
