Providing Current, Optimum Competence to Clients

In addition to keeping abreast of laws and guidelines, counselors should include the following practices in order to provide current, optimum competence to their clients:

· Pursue opportunities for professional development. Most national and state credentials even require counselors to complete continuing education training in order to stay current on theories, trends, and new data in the field.

· Remain current within the counselor’s area of responsibility by reading, consulting, networking, and otherwise bringing new research, trends, and information as added resources for serving the clients.

· Represent credentials accurately. Only earned and applicable credentials should be listed.

· Provide only those services for which the counselor is trained and qualified. Counselors should have training in a particular technique before they practice it and should not try to work with students who have conditions beyond the counselor’s realm of knowledge.
