Chapter 25 – Out

Looking through the window, I see the troop girls with terrified looks on their faces. There are people dressed in blue holding up guns aimed at them, blocking the front and back entrances to the church. One of the women appears to be talking to one of the men in blue, shaking her head. Loghan and I look back to the basement window we just climbed through. We see flashes of light in the darkness of the room. We then wait a few moments longer and see the people in blue point their guns down, turn back to the entrances, head up the stairs, and leave.

Loghan looks over to us and drops his jaw. "We need to leave now!"

We look behind us and see a six-foot wooden fence under a line of trees along the edge of the church property. The fence surrounds a house's backyard. We run to the fence and duck down.

I mouth to Peter and Loghan, pointing up, "I'll go first," and scale the fence.

On the other side, through the cracks in the wooden slots, I see Peter lifting Emma. Once Emma's on top of the fence, she throws both legs over and falls into my arms. I fall with her from the weight, and we both roll on the ground. Peter and Loghan then scale the fence.

We hear men's voice's outside the church.

"They must be close," one of the voices says.

Loghan taps my shoulder and whispers, "We need to leave right now!"

I nod, grab Emma's hand, and follow Loghan and Peter across the backyard. We head toward the front of the yard, staying in the shade of scattered trees whenever possible. My heart leaps to my chest when we hear dogs barking. I then realize that the barking is coming from the church side of the fence. The people in blue must be the police, and they must have unleashed dogs trying to pick up our scent.

When we run across a section without any trees, I nearly wet my pants when I hear growling from a shaded spot nearby. I quickly look toward the sound and make out a mean-looking Rottweiler. The Rottweiler's bearing its teeth only feet to the left of us. The Rottweiler charges; I let out a squeal and push Emma to run faster. I hear a clang, look over and see the Rottweiler laying on the ground. Squinting my eyes, I see something sparkle from the moonlight in front of the Rottweiler. I focus my eyes and realize it's a metal fence surrounding the dog. I'm so glad to see the Rottweiler's behind it and in the kennel.

Peter and Loghan finally get the gate open, and we run to the side of the house. Along the side, there are a bunch of outside kids' toys. Peter looks over at them as if he's searching for something. Wow, Peter, I'm sure there's something that we can ride and go fast there, I think. Loghan stops, puts his backpack down, and pulls out a folded electric hover scooter.
