I can’t sing sing,

I won’t sing sing,

I’ll tell you the reason why.

I can’t sing sing,

I won’t sing sing,

For my whistle is getting dry.

Signature Wm. Kemmler

In keeping with the lighthearted spirit of the jingle, the paper noted that Kemmler’s whistle was almost always wet, and, if the brutal murder of Tillie Ziegler was not cause enough, Kemmler should be put to death because he was a bad rhymester.148

At about six o’clock on May 23, 1889, Kemmler boarded the central train to Auburn. He talked freely along the way about many topics, most notably about crime and punishment, murder and the death penalty. Although much had taken place since Ziegler’s murder, Kemmler remained prepared to suffer the ultimate penalty for his crime. Upon his arrival at Auburn prison later the same evening, Kemmler was placed in solitary confinement. Initially he was extremely nervous, unable to sit or sleep, but he soon settled down. He was locked up in a steel cell with “no opportunity of talking to any person save his watchers.” 149 He would remain there until his execution.
