Chapter Nine

Every day that week, I went to The Chipped Mug for coffee and breakfast so I could reach out to that Harley guy. He finally started talking a little to me. One morning, I stood at the counter and talked to him as he continued to fill orders.

I asked him, “So where are you from?”

Harley looked at me for a moment before answering, “I grew up in Tennessee. What about you?”

“I’ve been in Baltimore my whole life. So what made you move up here?”

“Um,” he took a deep breath before continuing, “I kinda followed my boyfriend, well ex now. He had some friends around here and I just came with him and opened The Chipped Mug.”

“How long have you been here?”

“Um, just a few months.”

I nodded and thought about what he said, “Is he, your ex, part owner too?”

He huffed out a humorless laugh, “No way.” Then mumbled, “This is the one thing he didn’t control.” His eyes shot up to mine when he realized what he said. He looked scared and worried.

I offered a small smile to try to make him more comfortable and changed the subject, “I like all the paintings in here,” I looked around the little shop. “I’ll have to bring my brother in here, he’s a photographer so I’m sure he would appreciate it.”

I saw the first genuine smile come from him as he said, “My friend in Tennessee sends me some of his artwork, so I display it. I’m trying to convince him to move up here.”

“Well, he’s fantastic.” We talked for a few more minutes before I had to leave for work.

Reese and I had lunch and dinner together every day and he would beg me to stay the night with him. As much as I wanted to, I was afraid of moving too fast, so I held strong to staying at my own place. That is, until he finally broke me on Thursday. He managed to convince me that it was only one extra night since he already made me promise to spend the weekend with him. That, I didn’t need coaxing on. I was a little worried about both of us getting ready for work Friday morning, but we worked out our shower times and everything the night before. I was able to shower while he worked out in his apartment complex’s gym, since I definitely didn’t participate in that. It actually ended up being a wonderful morning. That probably had as much to do with the fact that Thursday night was the first night I had gotten any sleep all week.

Friday night, he took me out to that new restaurant, Giovanni’s, we had gone to a couple weeks ago. Of course we had a ton of fun. It turned out that they had a live jazz band play every Friday and we decided to come back the following week. Neither of us knew anything about jazz or had even necessarily liked it before, but being able to watch the musicians play was kind of amazing.
