Wyatt found Chaz and Angelo in the sitting area of his hotel room. With his arms spread wide, he belted out the words that had whispered in his head all the way back here. “She was music and laughter, meant for happily ever after, but I made her hold on too long.”

The two bandmates exchanged thoughtful glances, and their heads bounced as they tried out the lyrics to the music they’d created.

At last, Chaz nodded. “I like it. You got more?”

“Not yet, but I just came up with that much on the car ride. I think I can have the lyrics down by later tonight and then we can play around with them against the backdrop of music in the studio tomorrow.”

Chaz clapped. “Okay, so what are you waiting for? Get to it, lyric boy. I’ll order Chinese for dinner. What do you want?”

“I’m not hungry,” he replied. “I’ve got words to write.”

He left the two men flashing thumbs-up and entered his bedroom. After closing and locking the door, he pulled a notebook from his bag, along with a pen, which he stabbed into his hair behind one ear. He grabbed his guitar from its stand in the corner and settled on the bed. With all his necessities ready, he strummed the bridge and toyed with the words in his head before committing them to paper.

She was music and laughter,

Meant for happily ever after,

But I made her hold on too long.

She had a way about her,

I know I can’t live without her,

But I made her hold on too long.

Every word of his frustration with Leah poured out onto the page. This was his pain, his loss, his disappointment—just as Chaz had insinuated in the studio.

She hung up before I realized her worth

I’m the loneliest man on the face of the earth

Some women are too precious to wait on hold.

Now I’m home on bended knee,

Begging her to come back to me,

But I made her hold on too long.

He had no idea how many hours passed while he wrote, rewrote, and wrote again. When he finally left his room to stretch the kinks from his back and grab a bottle of water from the fridge, he found the living area dark. The air was redolent with the pungent seasonings of soy sauce and sesame oil. He flipped on the light and surveyed the debris of white takeout boxes littering the counter and stovetop.

“We saved you some.”

He turned to find Chaz, his arm thrown over Jenny’s shoulder. Both looked sleepy and sated.

“What happened to Angelo?”

“He left when Jenny got here. Three on a date makes him uncomfortable.”

Crap. Just what he didn’t need right now, another reason for Leah to despise him. “Umm... Chaz, can I talk to you for a sec?”

“Who’s stopping you?”

He gestured toward Jenny, who was apparently an expert in body language, because she yawned and spread her arms wide.

“Wow,” she exclaimed. “I didn’t realize how late it is. I’ve gotta get home and get some sleep. I’ve got work in the morning.
