Speaking to Jordan would be easy. The hard part would be trying to keep it a secret from Zeke. To do so, I would have to very carefully isolate our link and shield it separately so that he wouldn’t know there was someone else in my mind. Ironically, I didn’t even know that was possible until Zeke and I started experimenting on the different ways we could communicate with each other. It was handy having an alpha for a best friend, so it made me feel completely deceitful not sharing what I was going to do with him. I rationalised this by conceding that if I was caught, the less he knew, the better if was for him. There was no way I was going to jeopardise Zeke’s career as well as my own freedom.

Whilst appearing to be listening intently to the topography lesson, I began preparing the link. I located the strand of Zeke’s consciousness that had taken up residence in my psyche. Zeke’s intense concentration vibrated through the connection. It still amazed me that he seemed to actually be applying himself. I wondered if I even needed to split the connection, because at this rate, he wouldn’t have noticed it if I punched him in the jaw. Where was the boy in the cap with the holes who used his telekinesis to play tricks on the teachers? He was where I should be, the reasonable part of my brain said. He was making the most of the opportunity he had been given. Meanwhile, here I was throwing it all away on the off chance that it would lead me to the people who were behind Dad’s death.

When I’d added enough mental buffering to our connection, I bit the bullet and reached out to Jordan telepathically. Smugness transmitted through to me as he opened his mind. It made me immediately want to withdraw.

Well, well. Finally decided to come and play, huh? Jordan thought to me.

I want to know what other information you have about Omega and what it had to do with my dad’s murder, I thought. There was no point beating around the bush about it lest Jordan got any ideas that I had other intentions.

There’s not much else to tell for now. But I know of a way that we can find out what’s happening for real. If you’re up for it?

No, you’re not up for it! a part of my mind screamed. Zeke shifted in his chair and stretched his legs. With bated breath, I waited for him to settle again before I reached out to Jordan.

Where would we be going? I wanted to know. I had a very short leash around my neck and there was no way that I was going to risk getting caught if I didn’t have all the details.

The facility where Hoffman Industries does its android testing is on the far side of the Row. We’ll have to go there and make contact with someone from Omega, he thought.

That’s across the City Square checkpoint, I thought back.
