Chapter Six

‘Svea, let me in.’

‘Go away.’

‘I’m not leaving till we talk about this,’ Ash said through the heavy door.

He rested his forehead against the wood. She’d left him standing out there on the beach, his ragged breaths coming in bursts, wondering what the hell had happened.

Well, he had a pretty good idea—she’d panicked and changed her mind. And now he was standing outside her door, trying to persuade her to let him in. He wanted to check that she was all right. He knew they couldn’t go to sleep before they’d talked.

Damn, he felt like such a fool for rushing things. Why had he behaved like such a brute? He’d promised her he wouldn’t touch her, but he’d broken his word time and time again, ruining her trust.

But the taste of her kiss had been intoxicating...the feel of her body against his too much of a temptation. And she’d seemed to come alive under his touch. She’d pressed herself against him as if she wanted him, squirmed against him as if she needed satisfaction... And he’d wanted to give it to her. He’d never wanted anything so much.

‘Svea, you’re going to have to face me eventually. Can you please open the door?’

He pressed his ear against the wood and heard gentle footsteps behind the door, as if she were pacing up and down. He softened his voice. ‘You can’t just bury your head in the Braewood sand and pretend it never happened. You can’t hide from me forever. Come on...you know I’m right...’

Finally he heard her pad over to the door, and slowly she opened it a little. He took in her wide blue eyes, her flushed cheeks, her lip caught between her teeth. Thank goodness she’d had the sense to change into dry clothes—a long white nightgown Ellette must have given her. She looked stunning, with her damp long blonde hair tumbling down over her shoulders. This virginal vision of her didn’t help to ease his desire, but at least she was wearing more material than before. He swallowed. More material was good. He didn’t know if he’d have had the strength to stay away from her if she’d still been standing there in that clinging wet tunic.

He, too, had had the sense to pull on a dry tunic and breeches before coming up here, although his feet were bare and he hadn’t warmed up yet. But that probably had more to do with her cool treatment of him rather than their late-night swim.

‘Can I come in?’ he asked.

She sighed, as if resigned, and pulled the door open a fraction wider, leaving it ajar before walking over to the bed and sinking down on it, wrapping her arms around her waist.

He walked in and closed the door behind him. But he was careful to stay beside it. He wasn’t sure how she was feeling about him—she was certainly giving off mixed signals. It seemed she couldn’t even bring herself to look at him. Instead, she was studying a little mark on the wooden floor, swirling her pretty toes around it.
