Elizaâs hand shook slightly on his arm, and she had to steel herself not to walk away, to apologise for her words and retire to her room. But she would not run and hide. This man was her husband, and yet she had not seen him in days. She had not done anything â as far as she knew â to offend him, and yet he barely looked at her.
She was miserable, and she had to say something, else she was going to explode.
His eyes had been so fierce when he had turned to face her that she had almost recoiled, but they had calmed now. Not that she was daring to look directly at them.
"I-" he began, and then the words stopped. But he moved one hand to lightly cup her cheek, and she froze, shocked at the contact, not wanting to scare him away. She wanted to feel just a little less alone in this grand house.
"You are not a disappointment to me," he finally said, and a warmth spread through her heart. She dared to meet his eyes and saw pain and misery there that she was sure were echoed in her own gaze.
But if she was not a disappointment, why did he keep his distance?
Why had they not consummated the union?
She could not ask such a question out loud, but the fact that she was a married virgin was a devastating blow to her confidence.
"Jeremyâ¦" she whispered, reaching up to touch the fingers that were against her face with her own fingertips. "Tell me what to do, and I will do it. I do not wish to live like thisâ¦"
"I did not wish to marry," he said, and the words felt like an icicle had been plunged into her heart. "And so I cannot tell you any way to fix this situation."
She dropped her fingers from his hand like they had been burnt. He did not wish to be married to her. And yet they were wed. And her reputation would have been destroyed if they had not wed.
There was no way she could fix such a fatal flaw in their relationship.
She closed her eyes, in order to stop tears from falling.
"Good night, my lord," she said, hoping he would take the hint.
For a few moments, his warm hand remained on her skin. And then she felt the cold night air as he removed it, and opened the library door, and ascended the stairs.
Not for the first time, Eliza sobbed herself to sleep that night.
