Morally, I’ve done nothing wrong, but that’s not how I feel when I step into my apartment.

John leans against the living room wall with his arms crossed. Sweat stains darken his Pray Train Conquer Repeat t-shirt. His black cycling shoes rest on my kitchen floor with pebbles and dirt caking the bottoms. He makes my apartment smell like sweat and wet grass.

“Nice hair. Nice nails.” He stares me up and down. “You look relaxed. Your cheeks are glowing.”

“I’ve been dancing since last night.”

“Dancing? That’s all?”

“John, you know that. Last night, I turned the phone around to let you see me on the dance floor.”

“Since when do you decide to crash in a hotel room without telling me?”

“John—”

“Don’t, okay. I knew you wanted to be with me, and I keep making us wait and I thought you could handle that. I mean, love always trusts and assumes the best.”

The inside of my mouth becomes a furnace. “What are you saying?”

“I can’t believe I’m asking this, but I’d rather know. Were you with somebody else last night?” He closes his eyes. “Did you cheat on me?”

A chill runs through me, and even though the answer is no, I can’t speak. My heart hurts.

This is what he thinks of me?

“Chablis?”

I find my voice. “No, I didn’t—”

“A last-minute hookup before the wedding? Some brother down in B-more willing to take care of your needs because I’m not?”

I’d never.

I’m not.

No.

I spin around so fast I almost tumble over my own feet.

My vision blurs and I can’t see the knob when I reach for it and his voice fills my ears but I don’t care that he’s calling calling calling my name when I rush out the door and slam it behind me.
