Seeking Redemption

Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada was finally granted an opportunity to meet with King Philip; Emperor Charles V had abdicated and retired to the monastery at Yuste where he advised his son who inherited the Spanish throne. Quesada used this opportunity to speak of the fabulous riches that awaited in the lands he had explored in the service of the Crown, and to request the governorship of the region. He was disappointed by the king’s decision to award him the titles of Marshal of Bogotá and Adelantado of the Llanos instead of governor. He was promised the title of marquis if he succeeded in locating and settling Manoa, the supposed true realm of El Dorado. Such honors and titles fell far short of those bestowed upon Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro; even Sebastián de Benalcázar had received a governorship.
